New warrant for former Hellenic Postbank chief issued

Prosecutors on Thursday issued a fresh arrest warrant for the former head of Hellenic Postbank (TT) Angelos Filippidis, who is in a Turkish jail pending his extradition to Greece in connection with a loan scandal embroiling TT, after a probe by the country’s money-laundering agency revealed that he issued suspicious loans worth a total of 104 million euros to a series of companies.

A 52-million-euro loan given by TT in 2009 to a real estate firm that subsequently filed for bankruptcy has come under particular scrutiny.

The new arrest warrant against Filippidis, who was arrested earlier this month on charges of breach of faith, fraud and money laundering, came after prosecutors brought charges against everyone who was a member of the TT board when Filippidis was in charge.

Several entrepreneurs are to be charged in connection with the widening scandal, according to sources.
