Some cash found for struggling Athens care home for elderly
A care home for elderly people in Athens, which had its electricity cut off last week, is to receive more than 350,000 euros from social security funds to ensure that it can keep operating.
It was decided during a meeting between officials on Thursday that a total of 365,000 euros would be paid to the Aniaton Hospice in Kypseli, which is owed more than 3 million euros by state-run funds for the care it provides to elderly people, most of whom are in wheelchairs.
This has led to the home being unable to pay its 170 employees since March and having little food to feed the 235 elderly people it cares for.
The Public Power Corporation restored power to the hospice last week after its case gained publicity. PPC said it had not realized that the building was used as a care home as the electricity bill was in the name of an individual, not an organization.
The Development Ministry announced on Friday that a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises have expressed interest in the European Union-funded program for their support.
