Rise in number of Athenians leaving city for Christmas

The number of cars leaving Athens this Christmas is almost 50 percent up on the same period last year, according to traffic police.

Officers said that between December 19 and 22, almost 252,000 cars were driven out of the capital, compared to just over 167,000 in 2011.

The busiest day was December 22, when more than 82,000 cars left Attica.
