Heavy rainfall causes flood, damage in Alexandroupolis
Heavy rainfall in northern Greece late Thursday and Friday led to the flooding of several homes and stores in the city of Alexandroupolis.
The local fire service was called more than 60 times to rescue people trapped in homes or cars due to floodwaters or to pump out flooded ground-floor and basement homes and stores.
The rainfall, which was accompanied by a heavy hailstorm that lasted several minutes, knocked out the power supply across much of the city. The floodwaters also caused problems on local roads.
State inspectors were due to assess the extent of the damage once weather conditions improve.
The Development Ministry announced on Friday that a large number of small and medium-sized enterprises have expressed interest in the European Union-funded program for their support.
