The magistrate investigating a complex money laundering network centered around former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos is to summon the onetime socialist strongman for additional testimony early next month as evidence of further corruption has come to light, Kathimerini understands.
Gavriil Mallis, who has been probing Tsochatzopoulos’s alleged acceptance of some 2 billion euros in kickbacks from defense deals, and an extensive money laundering network involving countless offshore companies and properties, is said to have acquired a wealth of new evidence relating to illicit transactions. Mallis is also reportedly keen to grill the ex-minister over claims made by the latter’s cousin and former business partner, Nikos Zigras.
The 73-year-old ex-minister told Kathimerini in an interview earlier this month that his prosecution was politically motivated and threatened to reveal information about other politicians when he stands trial.
