E-mail ‘proof’ of Proton Bank embezzlement

An e-mail found on the computer of one of some 30 suspects in the Proton Bank embezzlement case appears to be proof that executives at the lender were aware in 2010 that just over 500 million euros had been lent to companies that were part of a group owned by the bank’s main shareholder, Lavrentis Lavrentiadis, rather than the 73 million euros Proton had reported to the Bank of Greece.

Kathimerini understands that the e-mail shows executives knew that seven companies in which Lavrentiadis was involved had obtained loans of 357 million euros, without providing any guarantees.

Lavrentiadis and several other key suspects in the case are currently in custody.
