Court deems state broadcaster's shutdown constitutional

In a narrow vote, Council of State judges ruled on Wednesday that the contentious closure of public broadcaster ERT last June was constitutional.

POSPERT, the union representing some 2,600 employees that were fired overnight had appealed against the shutdown, claiming it contravened Greek and European legislation.

The court decided, however, that the brief time before an interim service was back on air meant that no law had been broken.

The decision to close ERT led to Democratic Left quitting what was then a three-party coalition.
