Roma activist won't join Potami

Stavros Theodorakis, leader of the recently established To Potami party, denied over the weekend that Thrace-based Roma activist Sabiha Suleiman (photo) was to be incorporated into the centrist, pro-Europe partys candidate list for the upcoming European Parliament elections.

The rumor was sparked following a meeting between Theodorakis and Suleiman in the area of Drosero in Xanthi, northeastern Greece, on Saturday, where according to the former, the two discussed issues relating to the Roma settlement in the area.

Launched in February, To Potami recently rose to third place in opinion polls conducted in view of the May 25 elections.

The main leftist opposition SYRIZA recently included Suleiman in its candidate list for the May election before withdrawing her candidacy two weeks later. Her nomination had caused controversy as she is unpopular with a portion of the Muslims minority because of her attempts to separate Roma Muslims from the rest.

Meanwhile, SYRIZA chief Alexis Tsipras was expected to unveil the leftist partys complete European Parliament candidate list on Tuesday.
