Kammenos eyes alliances with other anti-austerity parties after poor result

Independent Greeks leader Panos Kammenos said on Monday that he would call a party congress to discuss his anti-austerity grouping’s poor showing in the European Parliament elections and forge alliances with other parties.

The right wing party garnered 3.4 percent of the vote, compared to the 7.5 percent it received in the June 2012 elections. Kammenos told Athens-Macedonian News Agency that he would seek to create alliances with other smaller anti-bailout parties.

He said that these parties won around 450,000 votes, which is more than double the 200,000 that Independent Greeks lost since 2012. Kammenos said he would extend invitations to these parties to take part in the congress.
