Southwestern Peloponnese blaze brought under control

Hundreds of professional and volunteer firefighters managed to bring a large blaze in the southwestern Peloponnese that had threatened homes and an ancient site under control on Tuesday after battling the flames for more than 24 hours.

The blaze, which broke out near the historic village of Meligalas around noon on Monday prompted the partial evacuation of four villages and emergency measures to be put in place at the site of Ancient Messene.

The wildfire, which razed brush and forestland was brought under control on Tuesday afternoon, the Athens-Macedonia News Agency reported, adding that firefighters and water-dumping craft will remain in the area to ensure that the blaze is fully extinguished.

The extent of the damage has yet to be assessed.
