5.2-magnitude tremor not linked to Thursday's Crete quake, seismologists say
A strong undersea quake, measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale, occurred shortly after 3.30 a.m. on Friday, under the seabed between the southern Aegean islands of Crete and Santorini.
According to seismologists, the quake’s epictenter was located 46 kilometers southwest of Santorini, virtually in the same spot of a 5.3-magnitude quake on Thursday morning.
Talking to Skai, the head researcher of the Athens Geodynamic Institute, Gerasimos Papadopoulos, said that the phenomenon of “twin quakes” is not unusual and that Friday’s tremor was not linked to Thursday’s quake.
The second quake caused no major damage but the panic it provoked among some residents of Santorini resulted in two people sustaining minor injuries in their attempt to flee their homes.
