Greek farmers end highway blockades, at least for now

Farmers demanding tax breaks and cheaper fuel began driving their tractors back to their fields on Wednesday morning, ending some 50 highway blockades that have restricted traffic flow for over 30 days all over Greece.

Following talks with government officials earlier this week, unionists agreed to withdraw their tractors from key highway points even though negotiations with Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras and his counterparts holding the labor, agriculture and environment portfolios, failed to yield any tangible results.

Unionists representing farmers said that they are prepared to back down temporarily, though they have called for a protest rally to be held in central Athens on March 5.
