Horse meat detected in meat imported from Romania

Traces of horse meat have been discovered in two products sold as beef, Greek authorities have said.

Inspectors of the Hellenic Food Authority (EFET) on Wednesday said they had detected horse DNA in meat imported from Romania that was packaged by the Zikoudi Vasiliki company in Piraeus.

The two samples – taken from products labelled as “Frozen Beef Meat Neck” and “Frozen Beef Meat Topside” – were part of a total 1,064 kilogram import.

EFET said another 50 beef samples would be analyzed in the coming days.

Furniture retailer IKEA on Monday said it was removing Swedish meatballs from its restaurants in Greece after traces of horse meat were found in the same product in the Czech Republic.
