Motion on 'Greeks only' armed forces to be voted on next week
A motion to block any naturalized Greeks from entering the country’s armed forces is to be voted on next week after it was withdrawn from Parliament today over a technicality.
The legislation, proposed by 84 New Democracy MPs who want only those with blood or birth ties to Greece to serve in the military, is opposed by PASOK and Democratic Left but has been backed by far-right Golden Dawn.
The opposition of two of the three coalition partners means that the Independent Greeks will have to vote for the motion for it to become law. The nationalists cast doubt on Thursday on whether they would back the proposal.
