New Democracy’s mayoral candidate for Athens, Aris Spiliotopoulos, said on Monday that he is in favor of constructing a mosque in Athens, but not near the city center.
“Yes to the mosque, no to where [current Athens Mayor Giorgos] Kaminis wants it to be built,” the former tourism minister told Mega television.
The government has already approved construction at the site of a disused naval depot in the industrial district of Votanikos.
In the same interview, Spiliotopoulos repeated his proposal for holding a referendum on where the Islamic place of worship should be built.
The ND candidate, who polls second after Kaminis ahead of the May 18 elections, also said Athenians should vote on plans to pedestrianize Panepistimiou Street and criticized Kaminis for not celebrating Panathinaikos’s triumph at the Greek soccer cup final on Saturday by lighting up the city.
