Minister to meet unions over plan to curb street protests in Athens

Public Order Minister Nikos Dendias is due to meet union representatives on Tuesday to discuss plans to limit the impact of small protests.

The government wants to adopt a pilot scheme whereby smaller protests, with less than 100 or 150 people taking part, will not lead to roads being closed by demonstrators.

Dendias is to explain the governments intentions to the heads of the countrys two largest unions, ADEDY and GSEE.

In 2012, there were 5,600 protests in Greece. Of these, 661 took place in central Athens. According to police estimates, about 400 of the protest held in the city center had less than 100 participants

Dendias wants to introduce 15 criteria according to which authorities will decide if protesters have a right to block traffic.
