Police arrest man over Xanthi murder

Police in the northern Greek city of Xanthi have arrested a 35-year-old man in connection with the slaying of a 34-year-old woman on Thursday.

The suspect has in the past faced allegations of drug use as well as rape. His fingerprints were found on a vehicle near the crime scene.

A security guard has reportedly testified that he saw the suspect near the crime scene before the attack. The witness said that the suspect appeared to be drunk.

Evidence suggests the victim had been sexually abused and beaten before her body was set on fire.

According to reports the 34-year-old woman lived in Thessaloniki, and came to Xanthi to spend the Christmas holiday with her family.
