Police break up uni cleaners' protest

A predawn police raid at the administration department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, which had been occupied by protesting contracted employees, led to 11 arrests on Friday.

The protesters had held the building for 70 days over claims that they are owed money by the university for campus cleaning services outsourced to the private contractor that employs them.

The raid took place at 4.15 a.m., and had been ordered by Thessaloniki first instance prosecutor Angelos Mademlis following a request signed by 44 academics for authorities to put an end to the siege and the cleaning crews strike, which has resulted in piles of garbage building up around the campus.

The 11 were released and ordered to appear before the prosecutor again Monday.
