No plans to extend conscription

The government will not proceed for the time being with plans to lengthen military service, Defense Minister Panos Panayiotopoulos said Tuesday.

Ministers have discussed the possibility of extending the length of conscription over the past few months but Panayiotopoulos said that there first needed to be a detailed study of the “social parameters.”

Conscripts serve nine months in the military at the moment.
