Greek defense minister meets US counterpart in Washington DC

The United States recognizes Greece’s “strategic role” and the country’s position as a stable and stabilizing factor in its region said Greek Defense Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos during an official meeting with his US counterpart Chuck Hagel in Washington DC on Tuesday.

Avramopoulos and Hagel discussed a string of bilateral issues such as military cooperation between the two countries, the reinforcement of Greek armed forces amid the ongoing crisis, the issue of Cyprus as well as the situation in the Middle East.

Talks also focused on the upcoming US visit of Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras who is scheduled to meet with US President Barack Obama in Washington DC on August 8.

On Wednesday, Avramopoulos was scheduled to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum where a memorandum of understanding regarding World War II research was expected to be signed by both countries.
