Athens International Airport (AIA) announced on Wednesday that it will offer incentives to airlines for the coming winter in a bid to reverse the declining trend of last season and to bolster tourism traffic to Greece.

These incentives will include a discount of up to 15 percent on airport charges for any companies that maintain the same number of flights as last year through the country’s main airstrip, as well as a subsidy of 5 to 15 euros per transfer passenger.

The incentives concern the period from November 2012 to March 2013, AIA said, and are aimed at stemming the loss of airlines that have decided to take Athens off their flight routes due to the local airport’s high charges, as well as reduced traffic due to the economic crisis.
