Stock index climbs to a 16-month peak

Stocks on the Greek bourse chalked up major gains in the year’s first session, boosted by investor confidence in the economy that was helped by the primary surplus in the 2012 budget, as well as the fiscal crisis deal reached in the US.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 941.26 points on Wednesday – its highest in the last 16 months – expanding by 3.67 percent from Monday’s 907.90 points. The market’s blue chip FTSE/ATHEX-25 grew by 4.18 percent to end at 322.63 points.

All blue chips climbed higher, led by Ellaktor (up 7.29 percent) and Viohalco (7.14 percent).

In total 151 stocks recorded gains, 17 posted losses and 16 remained unchanged.

Turnover amounted to 48.1 million euros, up from Monday’s 18.9 million.
