Third straight session of losses for main bourse index
While New York’s Dow Jones continued to climb to record highs on Tuesday, the Greek bourse continued its slide, with pessimism on banks and the recapitalization process that may well strip small stakeholders of their assets taking its toll.
The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index closed at 967.15 points, shedding 0.29 percent from Monday’s 969.97. The large-cap FTSE/ATHEX-25 index contracted by 0.25 percent, ending at 319.24 points.
The third southbound session for the local bourse was dominated by sinking banks, whose sectoral index has dipped to lows unseen since 1987. Piraeus Bank gave up 5.96 percent, while OPAP added 4.55 percent.
In total 63 stocks recorded gains, 75 sustained losses and 33 remained unchanged.
Turnover amounted to 46.9 million euros, down from Monday’s 51.8 million.
