Hardouvelis pledges to fix problems with property tax

Finance Minister Gikas Hardouvelis has promised to fix problems with the new single property tax, known as ENFIA, after strong criticism from taxpayers and opposition parties.

We have pinpointed a lot of mistakes and are trying to fix them, he told Parliament on Tuesday evening. A month ago I became personally involved and fixed a lot of problems that would have affected around 2 million people. A lot of work needs to be done but we will get there.

ENFIA incorporates all previous property levies, including the emergency tax collected for the first time via electricity bills in 2011. The Finance Ministry posted online what each household has to pay earlier this week but properties were reportedly overtaxed in 457 areas of the country.

Numerous other discrepancies were reported as well. The first of five ENFIA instalments is due to be paid by taxpayers on August 29.
