Exports rebound in June

Greek exports seem to be rebounding -- a development attributed to the return of relative political stability after the June 17 elections.

According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT), the value of Greek exports excluding petroleum products came to 1,418.7 million euros in June, compared to 1,373 million a year earlier -- a rise of 3.3 percent. EU countries accounted for 61.3 percent of Greek exports.

In the 12 months from July 2011 to June 2012 the rise was 6.3 percent.

“The data confirm the view recently held by Greek exporters, that traditional trading partners, especially in Europe, disturbed by the salvo of negative views about Greece, awaited the result of the elections in order to restart business with Greece,” said PSE President Christina Sakellaridi.

“Political stability is a basic pillar of a stable business environment and exporting enterprises,” she added.

Imports excluding petroleum products were a steep 18.2 percent lower in June, year-on-year, at 2,479 million euros.
