Reaping gains from cruise visits

By Nikos Roussanoglou

Greece is the third most popular destination in Europe among cruise passengers, according to the annual survey by the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) for 2013.

Greek ports received 4.6 million cruise visitors last year, with the most popular being Santorini, Corfu and Myconos, which also bagged all three top spots as the most attractive cruise passenger destinations.

The port of Piraeus took the fifth spot in Europe regarding home-porting, as a total of 1.3 million passengers boarded at Greeces main port to start their cruise trips to Greek islands, which amounts to a 1 percent increase from 2012.

The direct impact of the sector on Greeces economy amounted to 574 million euros in 2013 while its contribution to the labor market came to more than 11,000 jobs.
