The Finance Ministry is working on providing consumers with some strong incentives for demanding receipts from doctors, plumbers and other self-employed professionals.

Kathimerini understands that the tax authorities will deduct the whole of the amount on receipts from electricians, plumbers, hairdressers, doctors, lawyers, notaries and many other self-employed professionals from taxable income.

Besides these categories the ministry is considering the inclusion of receipts from bars, restaurants, nightclubs and other food and entertainment enterprises in the list. In contrast, receipts from supermarkets and apparel stores will not likely be of any value for tax statements.

The more receipts from the list that taxpayers collect, the greater their benefit will be. For instance, a taxpayer with an annual income of 25,000 euros would pay a tax of 3,670 euros today. If in the new year he collects receipts of 2,091 euros from self-employed professionals, his taxable income will shrink to 22,909 euros and his tax will go down to 3,147.25 euros. The plan is also aimed at offsetting the effect of the abolition of the tax-free threshold.
