Drop in demand for electricity

By Chryssa Liaggou

Electricity demand in Greece slumped 4.6 percent last month compared with January 2013, according to data released on Wednesday by the Independent Power Transmission Operator (ADMIE).

This is not only attributed to the financial crisis but also to the rather mild temperatures in January.

Total demand for power amounted to 4,496 gigawatt hours, down from 4,685 GWh a year earlier.

Demand from ordinary consumers declined by 5.1 percent on a yearly basis, while from high-voltage customers it fell 0.9 percent and from mines by 2.5 percent. Grid transmission losses were reduced by 6.4 percent from January 2013.

Total power production went down to 4,037 GWh from 4,505 GWh a year earlier, posting a 10 percent decline.

The output of lignite-powered units dropped by just 2 percent while that of renewable energy sources shrank by 4 percent and output from natural gas-powered plants slumped 18 percent.
