Electronic checks for taxpayers

By Prokopis Hatzinikolaou

According to sources, the Finance and Justice ministries are planning to expand the scope of their electronic cross-checking from 110,000 to 250,000 taxpayers in a bid to establish their actual incomes and property ownership.

Those who fail to declare the actual amount of their revenues and value of their total assets will be liable to very heavy penalties.

The General Secretariat for Information Systems presented on Wednesday the new system for the electronic processing of tax statements that as of 2015 will include all the details regarding the origin of revenues and properties.

This will facilitate the electronic cross-checking, as Deputy Finance Minister Giorgos Mavraganis explained that it will then boil down to mere math, with the addition of various revenues and the subtraction of the cost of living.

The process will put an end to the random sampling of taxpayers for checks that applies today.
