Google to offer support to Greek tourism firms

Google on Tuesday announced a plan to bolster Greek tourism’s online communication tools, in collaboration with the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO) and the Association of Greek Tourism Enterprises (SETE).

The “Grow Greek Tourism Online” initiative aims to provide enterprises in the sector with the necessary Internet-related skills and tools that will help them to up their business even beyond the summer season.

According to one study, an increase in Internet searches for Greek tourism facilities could boost the country’s GDP by up to 3 percent and create up to 100,000 new jobs, a statement said.

Businesses will receive support in learning how to use tools such as Google My Business and Google AdWords to improve their presence in search results. The initiative will be launched on Crete with events in Iraklio and Hania on September 2 and 3 respectively. All businesses, even indirectly related to tourism, can sign up to attend the events at g.co/GrowGreekTourism.

Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni said the use of innovative online tools were one more step toward extending the tourist season.

GNTO’s Panos Livadas said that, according to certain studies, use of the Internet could boost demand by up to 20 percent.
