Five supermarkets chains in Greece have sought recourse to the Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, asking it to revoke a decision banning them from selling food for babies up to 6 months and restricting the practice to pharmacies.
In July the country’s Supreme Court had provisionally accepted a demand by the Panhellenic Pharmacists’ Association asking for the suspension of an application of a ministerial decision allowing baby food to be sold in supermarkets as well.
The verdict was based on the opinion that the sale of food for babies up to 6 months old by the latter could be harmful for their health as the diet of such infants should be based on the instructions of experts.
The case of the pharmacists will be discussed in November.
Supermarkets have now submitted a study by the Research Institute of Retail Consumer Goods (IELKA), which found there is no risk to infants’ health from the sale of baby food by retailers other than pharmacies.
