Bank stocks contain benchmark's losses

A late rally by the stocks of National Bank and Eurobank saw the local bourse’s benchmark index recover most of its early losses while the blue chip index ended with small gains on Tuesday, after a bigger drop on Monday.

The Athens Exchange (ATHEX) general index ended at 752.20 points, shedding 0.30 percent from Monday’s 754.48 points. The blue chip FTSE/ATHEX 20 index expanded by 0.29 percent to close at 273.50 points.

Banks added 3.10 percent ahead of the announcement that the FTSE had kept the Greek bourse in its «developed markets» list. Leading the bank stocks were Eurobank Ergasias (up 5.66 percent) and National (4.28 percent). Public Power Corporation gave up 3.23 percent.

In total, 59 stocks secured gains, 77 suffered losses and 25 remained unchanged. Turnover came to 48.1 million euros.
