Retail turnover continued to head south in September

Retail commerce turnover declined in September by 10.7 percent from the same month in 2011, with the sales volume contracting by 12.1 percent, according to data by the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) published on Friday.

On a monthly basis, turnover fell 1.4 percent from August 2012 and sales volume shrank by 7.3 percent.

The biggest drop in terms of turnover was in the sector of furniture, homeware and electrical goods stores, which saw a 22.3 percent fall from last year, followed by pharmaceuticals and cosmetics (down 17.1 percent), books and stationery (16.6 percent) and major food stores (8.2 percent).

The only domain to register yearly gains was that of department stores, which saw a rise of 1.8 percent in turnover and 3.3 percent in sales volume.
