Gazprom leaks point to a deal in principle on gas rate

By Chryssa Liaggou

Russian energy giant Gazprom is reportedly close to an agreement with Greeces Public Gas Corporation (DEPA) on the price of natural gas, with Gazprom sources suggesting on Friday that only a few details remain to be settled before a deal is reached in ongoing talks in St Petersburg.

Athens, however, would not confirm the reports, saying it cannot understand why the Russians are in a rush, as Greek government officials categorically denied the existence of any sort of deal. DEPA officials were also of the same view.

On Thursday, government sources said two sides were close to striking a deal on a rate just under $400 per 1,000 cubic meters, against the current rate of $460/1000 c.m. The average rate for other European countries is $385/1,000 c.m.
