Mind your manners, please
Some members of SYRIZA, Greece’s leftist opposition party which came second in last month’s elections, overstepped the mark this week by voicing threats against any politician who dares sign or consent to any privatization or sale of state assets.
The House has passed relevant legislation with a comfortable majority and judicial authorities will be monitoring any transaction that takes place.
That said, issuing the kind of warnings expressed by several SYRIZA officials in recent days will only turn the art of politics into plain hooliganism.
The party led by Alexis Tsipras appears to have taken on the mantle of the old PASOK which, when it was Greece’s main opposition party, would block any attempt to privatize state property.
If SYRIZA really wants to offer a rational political alternative, it will have to distance itself from the champions of political hooliganism.
During times of crisis such as these, people expect a bit more maturity and responsibility from the country’s political representatives.
