Greece must avert the complete meltdown of its real economy and, at the same time, prevent social disintegration. German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s visit to Athens tomorrow is a sign that we are near an agreement that will entail painful measures for Greeks, but, at the same time, end speculation of a eurozone exit. Hopefully, no political party or “invisible hand” as it were, will attempt to wreak havoc on the occasion of this significant visit. Although mass protests are welcome in a democracy, violence and destruction will only taint Greece’s image abroad.

People have every right to be irked at recent corruption allegations and Greece needs to purge its institutions of graft; but this must not be done by way of kangaroo courts. The whole process should not affect that healthy part of our political system that is trying to keep the country afloat. Also, it must not be hijacked by those who appear keen to reduce Greece to a banana republic for their own ends. We must not let Greece drift into chaos, pushed by entangled interests, the quest for high television ratings, or the war cries of hardcore unionists.
