Fixing problems by ourselves

Sure, we need new faces in politics – but we also need sweeping institutional reforms. Greece’s foreign lenders are recommending changes to the nation’s political system, including the way in which political parties are funded. They are also asking for more transparency in the decision-making of ministers and public administration.

This is cause for shame. The troika should no be involved in such key institutional matters. It is our own business, for example, to finally abolish the legislation that protects ministers and deputies from prosecution.

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has repeatedly expressed his intention to shake things up by proposing changes to the political system or modifications to the existing Constitution. He should see through these pledges and let other political leaders live up to their own responsibilities.

The political period which began with the end of Greece’s military dictatorship is over. It’s time for radical reforms to the political system. We need new, solid foundations or we will end up making the same mistakes.
