A welcome ministerial departure
The resignation of Deputy Labor Minister Nikos Nikolopoulos on Monday should not have come as any surprise to those in the know.
The question is why a politician who evidently disagreed with the coalition government’s core stance vis-a-vis the memorandum and who had distinguished himself as something of a populist was appointed to such a key position in the first place.
The situation that the country is facing is particularly tough right now, which is why the current government needs to be led by people who fully comprehend what is at stake here and who are willing to support its central policies wholeheartedly.
Let’s not forget that the tolerance shown by former Prime Minister George Papandreou toward former minister Louka Katseli and other renegade members of his cabinet who had risen up eventually resulted in disaster for his administration.
That is something which should not be repeated and that is why Nikolopoulos’s resignation is actually a positive development.
