Staying the course

Nothing should be allowed to interrupt the momentum of the reform program and especially not the pressure being exerted on the government by vested interest groups as May’s local and European elections get nearer.

The only real strong card that the government holds right now to convince the electorate to cast a vote of confidence in its favor is that despite the huge cost on society of the reform drive, the country will change for the better once the program is complete.

The reform card is also strong when it comes to the negotiations with the country’s lenders. Even if the primary surplus ends up larger than anticipated, Greece’s creditors will continue to remain skeptical of the government’s abilities if they feel that the reform efforts have been allowed to stall once more.

The government must continue to work in this direction and not allow itself to get trapped in the mentality that doing nothing brings more votes because no one has their toes stepped on.
