Before it's too late

The issue of the continuous influx into Greece of undocumented immigrants seeking a way to enter the European Union has taken on large-scale if not uncontrollable dimensions.

The tragic stories which are reported by local and international media on a daily basis demonstrate the serious and worrying extent of the issue. Only last week 22 migrants downed off Samos when their boat capsized. Another seven have not been found. Dozens died trying to reach Italy over the past few days.

It appears that the EU has so far failed to grasp the magnitude of the situation while it still has yet to develop a comprehensive plan to deal with the problem, and this despite the cries for help hailing from a number of southern European member states.

What is needed at this pivotal point are immediate and brave decisions, before it is too late.
