A simple tax system is key

Greece is in urgent need of a tax system that is simple and that will not need to end up undergoing myriad changes to make up for its shortcomings.

The most recent tax bill voted through Parliament failed to fix the most fundamental problems that have for years plagued anyone trying to do business in this country. It was evident from the outset that the bill lacked serious preparation and was not governed by common sense.

In view of the big tax overhaul that has been heralded for later this spring, it will take a lot of hard and systematic work to remedy the errors and omissions that were apparently made under the stress of time and political pressure.

Most importantly, the drafting of the final tax bill must be assigned to people with know-how and firsthand experience of what is at stake here.

It is definitely not a task for unionist staffers and others who have repeatedly objected to reforms in this crucial sector.
