Off to a promising start

The first signs regarding the makeup of the new government are very encouraging. The names put forward for the ministers of finance and development are prime examples of people who have the necessary authority both in Greece and abroad, and who also have in-depth knowledge of their assigned areas of jurisdiction.

The majority of Greeks want to see Antonis Samaras succeed because they know that a failure on the part of the new prime minister and his government will throw Greece into a rapid downward spiral.

Hopefully, today’s announcement regarding the rest of the Cabinet will not disappoint and will be in the same vein as the two appointments that have already been more or less fixed. Hopefully, the other members will either be new and serious people from within the ranks of New Democracy or they will be respected experts who are not politicians.

The new government must tread very carefully and make sure that it does not give the impression that it is the product of compromise and strategizing between squabbling politicians.
