Time to rally behind the PM
The decisiveness shown by the prime minister should be rewarded by the country’s creditors, as it is now clear that Antonis Samaras knows it is imperative he helps Greece surmount the difficult hurdles it currently faces.
The coalition partners are being put to the test either because of conflict within the parties or because of their understandable hesitancy as far as the political cost attached to the upcoming measures is concerned.
Despite it all, however, they must muster the courage to support the current administration. Nothing would prove more useful in this direction than a crystal-clear explanation provided by the country’s lenders with regard to their intentions on reducing the Greek debt even further as well as readjusting the bailout program.
Halfhearted statements and threats don’t help. What is needed is straight talk and clear pledges from those on the outside as well, not just those who are risking it all in Greece.
