“Socrates Now” is the title of a well-traveled theater production expected in Greece after completing 250 performances in 14 countries. The New York-based Elliniko Theatro company presents Plato’s “Apology of Socrates,” a timeless work of ancient Greek literature, under the Acropolis -- in English.

Performances take place June 24-30 and then from July 1-7 at 9 p.m. at the Athens University Museum’s courtyard in Plaka. The one-man show stars Emmy-winning Yannis Simonides (photo) and is directed by Broadway veteran Loukas Skipitaris.

The play’s costumes were designed by Oscar- and Tony-winning Theoni Vachlioti Aldredge. Through its sense of humor and timeliness, Plato’s work offers an opportunity for a multifaceted cultural experience and political challenge -- not to mention an invitation -- to the city’s international visitors and residents.

Following each performance, viewers are invited to join a discussion with the actor and other members of the audience. With a glass of wine in hand, participants will explore various issues such as Socratic thought at a time of local and global financial and social crisis.

The 90-minute play has no intermission while the post-performance discussion will last another 30 minutes. General admission is set at 15 euros and includes a drink (10 euros for students). Following the Athens performances, shows will continue throughout the summer season in various cities around the country, in Greek this time. In the fall, “Socrates Now” is expected to be staged at the B&M Theocharakis Foundation in Athens. It will also go on stage in a number of high schools around Greece.
