PAOK sells Vieirinha to Wolfsburg

Thessaloniki club stands to receive 4.5 mln euros

By George Georgakopoulos

PAOK sold Portuguese winger Adelino Vieirinha to German club Wolfsburg on January 3 in a bid to make ends meet and secure UEFA licensing for its participation in the Europa League.

Having passed a medical test, Vieirinha signed a three-year deal on Tuesday with the Bundesliga side that will fetch the player 3.5 million euros, while PAOK stands to get a significant 4.5 million euros.

The news came on the day after the agreement for the departure of another PAOK star, Chile international defender Pablo Contreras, who is heading home.

Vieirinha and Contreras were instrumental in PAOK winning its Europa League group this season, beating Tottenham at White Hart Lane in the process and setting up a round-of-32 clash with Udinese.

However the club’s debts, which reportedly add up to 9 million euros, have forced PAOK president Theo Zagorakis to let at least two of the Thessaloniki giant's stars go, with at least one more set to follow, according to Greek press reports.

The next to go could be one of the three PAOK internationals: Stelios Malezas, Giorgos Fotakis and Dimitris Salpingidis.
