Greek U19s lose to Spain in final

By George Georgakopoulos

The Greek national Under-19 team succumbed to the might of the Spanish and lost 1-0 in the European Championship final that took place on Sunday in Estonia.

The Greeks, always the underdogs in this final, were second-best throughout the match but held on at the back until the 80th minute.

That was when Spain’s most valuable player Gerard Deulofeu fed Jese Rodriguez and he scored the winning goal for the Spaniards, with the Greeks having no answer to offer to that goal in the remaining minutes of the final in Tallinn.

Greece’s success in finishing second in the European Championship has also meant its automatic qualification to next year’s World Under-20 Championship that will take place in Turkey. This is the first time Greek soccer will be represented in such a tournament.
