Soccer title already turning red

Dimitris Papadopoulos (right) scored for Panthrakikos's first ever league victory over Panathinaikos.

By George Georgakopoulos

Olympiakos is already emerging as the indisputable favorite for another Super League title after just three rounds of games in the championship, as rival Panathinaikos stumbled again to drop seven points behind the reigning champion.

The Reds scored their third win in as many games on Saturday by beating host PAS Giannina 2-1. Costas Mitroglou and Rafik Djebbour were on target for the visitors, who are the only team with nine points.

Panathinaikos dominated the game with Panthrakikos at Komotini on Saturday but it was the hosts who got to score, through a former Panathinaikos player, Dimitris Papadopoulos, for a famous 1-0 victory. Panathinaikos now has two points after three matches, given it had started the season with a two-point penalty due to fan riots last spring.

Atromitos, the only other credible rival to Olympiakos this year, dropped its first points this season as it could not bend the resistance of newly-promoted Platanias at Hania. The goalless draw was overshadowed by the death of a Platanias fan due to heart failure during the game.

PAOK came from 1-0 down to defeat ambitious Asteras Tripolis at home, while cash-strapped AEK and Aris shared a 1-1 draw in Athens on Sunday.

Levadiakos could not score past eight-man Veria (0-0) and Kerkyra got its first point by drawing 1-1 at home with Xanthi.

On Monday Panionios defeated OFI Crete 2-1 to complete three wins in as many games. All three goals in the game at Nea Smyrni were own goals.
