Record-breaking season continues for Olympiakos

By George Georgakopoulos

Two goals by Javier Saviola sealed Olympiakoss 5-0 triumph over 10-man Apollon Smyrnis on Saturday as the Reds ended the first half of the season breaking more records, in a weekend where all top four teams in the Super League registered victories.

Olympiakos broke its own record going unbeaten away from home for 30 consecutive league games, and became the first team ever to reach the seasons halfway point with 16 wins and just one draw after thrashing host Apollon at Rizoupoli.

David Fuster, Costas Manolas and Andreas Samaris got on target for Olympiakos before the brace by Saviola, who has notched up 10 in the league,

The Reds have therefore remained 10 points ahead of second-placed PAOK who defeated Levadiakos 3-0 at home on Sunday courtesy of goals by Giorgos Katsikas, Akexandros Tziolis and Stefanos Athanasiadis, although Levadiakos threatened several times with an equalizer when the score was at 1-0.

Tasos Karamanos scored twice for Atromitos who beat visiting Panthrakikos 3-1 on Saturday. Dimitris Papadopoulos added the third for the Peristeri club, while Panthrakikos had temporarily equalized with Igor De Souza.

Panathinaikos shook off an early Xanthi goal by Panayiotis Triadis to beat its visitor 2-1 in Athens on Sunday as Algerian Mehdi Abeid scored two goals in one game for the first time in his career. Before the start of the game Panathinaikos president Yiannis Alafouzos revealed his plan for a second tier of stands to be built at the Apostolos Nikolaidis stadium that will extend its capacity to 22,000.

OFI Crete spent the first couple of months of the season in the relegation zone, but has now risen to seventh after its 2-1 home win over Panetolikos on Saturday.

In other weekend action, Platanias beat Panionios 1-0 at Hania, while the games of Kalloni with Ergotelis and Asteras Tripolis with Veria ended goalless.

The last Super League match for 2013 will take place on Monday as PAS Giannina greets Aris that has changed its president and coach. It is now chaired by Lambros Skordas and managed by Soulis Papadopoulos, the very pair that spared the club relegation last spring. , Sunday December 22, 2013 (22:34)
