Mavrias and Glykos in the national team

Santos announces squad to face Latvia and Lithuania

By George Georgakopoulos

Greece manager Fernando Santos has called up such fresh players such as Charis Mavrias of Panathinaikos and Panayiotis Glykos of PAOK to revitalize the squad that will represent Greece in the opening two games for the World Cup qualifiers on September 7 and 11 against Latvia and Lithuania respectively.

With the absence of such mainstays as Giorgos Karagounis and Michalis Sifakis, who are without a team, and injured Dimitris Salpigidis and Avraam Papadopoulos, the Portuguese coach has resorted to some new blood for the national team.

Here is the full squad for the games in Riga on Friday and in Piraeus next Tuesday:

Goalkeepers: Orestis Karnezis, Alexandros Tzorvas and Panayiotis Glykos.

Defenders: Loukas Vyntra, Stelios Malezas, Vassilis Torosidis, Kyriakos Papadopoulos, Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Dimitris Siovas, Nikos Spyropoulos and Jose Holebas.

Midfielders: Alexandros Tziolis, Costas Katsouranis, Yiannis Maniatis, Elini Dimoutsos. Lazaros Christodoulopoulos, Costas Fortounis, Charis Mavrias and Sotiris Ninis.

Forwards: Giorgos Samaras, Fanis Gekas, Costas Mitroglou and Stefanos Athanasiadis.
