‘The Knights’

The 13th Mercouria Theater Festival, organized by the municipality of Sykies in Thessaloniki, will kick off tonight with a performance of Aristophanes’ comedy “The Knights,” which castigates ancient Athenian demagogue Cleon. The Municipal Regional Theater of Roumeli production is directed by Giorgos Armenis, who also stars alongside Panos Skouroliakos and Costas Flokatoulas. The music is by Dionysis Tsaknis. All performances take place at the Manos Katrakis open-air theater. The festival will run to September 1.

‘Ecclesiazusae’

Aristophanes’ comedy “Ecclesiazusae,” which pokes fun at gender differences in ancient Athens, will be staged at the Dassos Theater in Thessaloniki for the last time tonight. Directed by Thanassis Theologis, the joint production of the Municipal Regional Theater of Volos and the Attiki Skini theater company stars Giorgos Partsalakis, Tassos Halkias, Despina Giannopoulou and Haris Aronis. The sets and costumes are by Akis Heirdaris. The production is currently on tour and will next go on stage at the Philippi Ancient Theater tomorrow.

Baroque
- Rethymnon

Oboist Spyros Kontos and harpsichordist Gerassimos Hoidas will join forces for a concert of baroque melodies at the Tholos in Cretan city Rethymnon this evening. The concert is part of the annual Rethymnon Renaissance summer festival and will start at 9.30 p.m. Admission is 5 euros.

EXHIBITION
Sarantis Karavouzis

A major retrospective of works painted by Greek artist Sarantis Karavouzis from the 1960s to the present day is on display at the Leonidas Kanellopoulos Cultural Center in Elefsina through to the end of August. The exhibition is arranged in three units: natures mortes, archaeological landscapes and indoor settings. The cultural center is open 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well as 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays to Sundays.

Maurice Maeterlinck’s children’s play “The Blue Bird,” which unravels the dreams of two youngsters, will go on stage at the Ancient Theater of Argos tonight. Adapted and directed by Costis Megapanos, the National Theater Children’s Stage production features actors Olga Politou, Dimitris Aronis, Dimitris Marizas, Mina Heimana, Sotiris Tzevelekos and others. The sets are by Giorgos Georgiou and the costumes by Savvas Paschalidis. The production is currently on tour and will next be staged at the Examilia Theater in Corinth on Friday.
